There’s a movie on the way about the life of the famous Tango singer Carlos Gardel:
Will it be any good, or just another dodgy tango movie?

Well, with cinemtography by Vitorrio Storaro, who shot ‘Sheltering Sky’ and ‘Last Emperor’, it should look lush anyway.
Incidentally, Storaro also shot Carlos Saura’s ‘Tango’, which I missed on SBS a few months ago, grrr…
Has anyone got nominations for their favourite tango movie?

There are no good tango movies :)
Anyone who manages to stitch more than one tango into an interesting plot to create a movie will become a legend. Until then don’t waste time watching tango movies, do it instead.

I partly agree with you. I haven’t seen a movie yet that’s satisfying both for tango and as a movie. But there are some great sequences: in ‘Assasination Tango’, the too-brief montage of performances in the hall with the chequered floor and the credits sequence with Pablo Veron and Geraldine Rojas (i think); in ‘The Tango Lesson’ there’s a fantastic dance in a mirrored hall. And ‘Tango Lesson’ was where I first heard and loved Hugo Diaz’s ‘Milonga Triste’ (an experience almost undone by then hearing Sally Potter’s version of it).
And because I love movies (sometimes even bad ones!) I can’t totally agree with your last comment. (But you prolly know that already!) :) I started tango partly because of ‘Tango Lesson’, and seeing great dancing (even in a mediocre movie) makes me want to do more dancing. But, like you, I wait for that movie that’s great for both its movie-ness and its tango…

Yes, I can appreciate that across the world a great number of people were drawn to tango through Sally Potter’s The Tango Lesson. So I must confess there is some quality to it, just not one I like :)
And I agree the finish to the movie with her singing is cringe worthy. But otherwise Milonga Triste is a beautiful piece of music. In fact the soundtrack to that movie is pretty bloody good.

Sounds like there’s a challenge there Mike to produce a good tango movie!

Oh come on everyone, get over it :). Many movies have a weak story line including the tango related ones. Maybe real tango cannot be captured on film. Anyway, this looks promising so I am looking forward to its release, hopefully it will be educational. Any extras – a bonus.
