The Guardian (UK) presents a very interesting (but short) interview with artist/composer/producer Gustavo Santaolalla from Bajofondo Tango Club. He talks about electronic music and its connection with tango and we also find that there is a new album in the works for the group.
It takes eight to tango
It takes a special kind of insight to see that Morrissey, the famously morose former frontman of the Smiths, is at heart a tango musician. But Argentine composer and producer Gustavo Santaolalla, who is bringing his group Bajofondo Tango Club to Britain this week, asked Morrissey to sing on a track for the eight-piece band’s forthcoming album. Morrissey, he says, has got that “cosmic tango vibe”.......

“Tom Waits is a tango guy.” I knew it!

Tom Waits is awesome. Unfortunately he hasn’t done a lot that really passes for tango music which is a pity as he definitely has the talent (as does Nick Cave) to make it possible. A few of Tom Waits’ tracks could be considered ‘alternative’ tango music; both Alice (2002) and Blood Money (2002) visit tango and other traditional styles throughout the albums.
Songs “Alice” and “Reeperbahn” from Alice (2002), “The Part You Throw Away” and "All the World is green" from Blood Money (2002) are some examples as well as “They tango till they’re sore” from Rain Dogs (1985), "Strange Weather" from Big Time (1988) and “How’s it gonna end?” from Real Gone (2004).
Lyrics could be a bit questionable for a nice intimate milonga though ;-)
I’ve stumbled across this interview of Carlos Libedinsky where he responds “I needed to dance to contemporary music. At night, I would listen to Tango at the milongas but at home I would listen to Tom Waits and discovered that I could Tango to Tom Waits music …and Bjork. I started experimenting in my studio.”
This could be an interesting avenue for people’s recommendations of songs they think they can tango to — I cast a vote for Fade into you by Mazzy Star :) I love this song.

I’m pretty sure that’s the Mazzy Star song that Ady plays a bit.

I didn’t know that… Because I wanted it to be an original idea how about Army Dreamers by Kate Bush.

I’ve been umming and arring about playing that song for a long time. It’s a vals (and I don’t want to get into any arguments about 3/4 or 6/8 or 9/12 or whatever, but it’s still a vals).
But instead I select Apocalyptica’s version of Metallica’s Enter Sandman at the last minute… every time.
