A Slogan for Siempre

Posted: 14:03, Wednesday 28 September 2005 by Megan Jones

We’re getting quite a few entries in the comments section of this article (mostly from Andrew and Ben). Please feel free to add some – serious and lighthearted…

The committee is currently looking at revamping Siempre Tango’s image, with a new batch of advertising material hopefully ready to go for the new year.

Question is, should we have a ‘slogan’?

For example, in the way that Nike has ‘Just Do It’ the following tango groups have their own subtitles…..

  • Tango Social Club of Canberra: ‘More Tango, More Often’
  • Southern Cross Tango: ‘It’s All About Style’
  • Siempre Tango: .....??????

Let us know your ideas! Being a community group, we’re keen to hear what you have to say, all suggestions will be considered!

Dear All,

It’s great you are looking for a slogan which describes adequately Siempre Tango. To come up with the best suggestion however, it would be of great use if you mentioned roughly what type of group you would be targeting… below are some you surely don’t want… but for your amusement….

Futuristic
Siempre tango: Will dance you to the next dimension.

New Age
Siempre tango: Rejuvenate your Root Chakra.

Funky
Siempre tango: Your favourite addiction Zone.

Sexist
Siempre tango: Where men can lead again.

For the elderly
Siempre tango: The community you’ve been searching for.

For marijuana lovers
Siempre tango: Think again.

For us all
SIEMPRE TANGO: TOUCH AND GO.
:)

Having said that, Ben's slogans sound excellent!

Siempre Tango: is currently in a holding pattern

..tee hee only joking..

Everytime I write one I think it sounds cheesey; does this mean maybe just having a slogan is cheesey? Or does this mean I am cheesey?(no comments on that please)

I think it should be very simple.. and very appealing to men and young people. hmmmmm….

Here are some I have thought of in the last couple of days. I too like the “passion” theme. Many, many more bad ones have been culled:

“Passion within movement”

“Movements in time”

Then there’s my favourite:

Mango respite!!

Rather than add to an impressive list, I’ll do some voting…I’m keen on ‘More than just a hug’ ...definitely something funny, or aimed at stroking the male ego would be good. Anna, I liked your ‘ST: where men lead’ (even if you were only joking), or ‘ST: where the women are too hot to handle’. Something that suggests we don’t take ourselves too seriously (which of course we do, but once they’re in…....)

Imogen, thanks for your comment. If you want to trap men how about:

Since Siempre is a community group and if nobody is adding any more slogans are we allowed to vote yet? Perhaps for the best 3 suggestions – I’m sure it will reduce the selection nightmare for the committee when it comes to taking the final decision.

I agree, were do we vote?

At 15:48 on Wednesday, 5 October 2005 Ben said:

Hi Guys,

As a community group everything of this nature (ie branding and image) needs to be run through the committee.

This rather successful information gathering exercise has certainly created something to think about for the committee in terms of how the slogan will be selected, certainly complicated by the fact there are so many great entries. As Megan mentioned in the original news item, all will definitely be considered – now we need to decide how this will occur. ie at the moment there is no means of voting!

We will keep you informed as to how the committee decides to make the selection process occur.

Stay tuned.

Most tango organisations don’t have slogans – Siempre Tango stands on its reputation of good teaching, good dancers, & good milongas. What more is needed?

At 07:09 on Thursday, 6 October 2005 Stephen said:

Sorry to fling a cat among the pigeons, but I’ve got a whole lot more I’ve been playing with for the last few days:

-Real men lead
-Real men lead… passionately

-The art of passion
-Passion takes two
-Unlock the passion
-Unloose the passion
-Live the passion / Living with passion

-Words cannot express…
-You’d never have believed you had it in you
-You’d never believe…

-Just embrace it!
-Do it. Feel it. Embrace it!
-It’s all in the embrace
-Embracing life
-The art of the embrace

-Let your body say it…
-Your body knows more than it’s saying
-Your body knows…

-’Cause it’s legal
-It’s just not cricket

-Your mother’d hate it
-’Cause mothers needn’t know everything…
-…’cause nobody says you can’t

-Go wild, go tango
-What’ve you got to lose?
-Why not?
-Why wait?
-Doing it to music!
-You only live once

And another comment….please bear in mind folks that the original prompt said “Question is, should we have a ‘slogan’?”
ie it’s not a foregone conclusion that there will be one! :)

Obviously people are suggesting that there should be one otherwise they wouldn’t be putting an effort in trying to contribute. Anyway, it is nice to see people being creative as well as amusing for the benefit of all. Good work guys.

Well said Ana! I think the slogan’s a great idea (I kinda have to say that now). I also like the idea of using a few different ones on our cards. It gives us some marketing versatility.

At 12:19 on Thursday, 6 October 2005 chook said:

I don’t think the slogan is a good idea, as it makes it too commercial. Is this business or recreation? I understand you would want to improve your gains through clever marketing, and there are some great ideas to choose from, but I think Siempre Tango speaks for itself.

At 08:06 on Friday, 7 October 2005 Colleen said:

I think there are some realy great slogans here but I do think you need to consider carefully whether a slogan is right for Siempre or not. Slogans can be a very powerful marketing tool but equally they can detract from or dilute the brand – Siempre Tango – particularly if it changes frequently. I am sure you are considering in your deliberation the basics like who you are trying to attract and what you are trying to achieve before making decisions on a slogan. Good luck!!

At 14:30 on Friday, 7 October 2005 Pat said:

I totally agree with the last two comments. Generating amusing & creative slogans has clearly been entertaining, however I don’t think Siempre Tango needs or would benefit from a slogan. ST speaks for itself through its quality activities. This is confirmed by the fact that most people who join do so through ‘word of mouth’.

At 16:32 on Friday, 7 October 2005 Ana said:

Hello. I think that Siempre Tango would benefit from an appropriate slogan. The purpose of a slogan in general is to evoke the benefits, reflect the uniqueness of whatever you are advertising and attract the audience. In short to establish a connection (in our case between the association and the public). If you have a spare moment and wish to find out more about the benefits of a slogan, Wikipedia has a comprehensive list. There is no doubt Siempre has a reputation of offering good milongas, good teaching and good dancers. However, it would be nice if more people knew about it. An effective slogan along with good advertising might give a chance to the general public (particularly men) firstly to capture their interests and secondly to learn more about Siempre.

I’m no expert, so I think Colleen’s marketing experience and advice is worth listening to.

At 20:59 on Friday, 7 October 2005 Ana said:

Pat, not many of us are experts in this one but it is nice to see the community getting involved to be helpful, creative and entertaining. In fact, I’ll never forget the ‘Mango respite’ comment! :)

Hi Guys,
Whilst Some of the slogans are good I agree with Colleen and can’t quite agree with “chook”.
Siempre is inconprehenshable to the non Spanish speaking public, so it doesn’t speak for it’s self.
I assume that you are aiming at the public.
So I hate to be boring and obvious, but to add the words Forever Tango would satisfy both the for and against.
Also there would be less reason to change it in the future

Oh the controversy!

Very funny Ben. I like it.

I’d like to add my 2 cents to the affirmative on this argument. Actually, no make that $2.

Currently we do have a “slogan” of sorts (you may prefer to call it a blurb), and it goes like this:

“Discover the powerful combination of the world’s most sensuous dance with Argentina’s richly passionate music!”

I think this is far too long. It still adorns the old postcards if you’re lucky enough to have one of the last few.

Maybe the term “slogan” was a poor choice as it seems to immediately imply tackiness. Sure many poor examples exist such as “oh what a feeling!” or “coke adds life”. But on the flip side when chosen well they can add value to a brand e.g. iPod Nano: Impossibly Small.

Any slogan would most likely only adorn the main name Siempre Tango and could, if chosen wisely, add interest to the advertising material – perhaps enough to get one or two people asking for more information. Rather than consist of a paragraph blurb on the rear of a postcard which we could not reproduce in newspaper advertising due to the cost.

The most effective advertising I have seen has been short sharp and to the point. Again, Apple are masters of this.

I agree with roger that Siempre does not help with non-Spanish speakers (however, I love the name and would never like to see it changed). Simply enhanced.

Having thought about it a bit more, I agree with Pat and Colleen that dilution of the brand is likely with changing slogans.

A couple of people have rightly pointed out that we have many aspects that speak for themselves and a lot of people come through word of mouth. But for those who don’t and haven’t seen the quality of Siempre, but are still interested in learning to dance have a myriad of options to choose from. I still think advertising is very important in this respect and having a clear and concise branding which still conveys enough information to get people interested in Siempre Tango rather than salsa or whatever is the vehicle to do this.

phew!

Ben

I wouldn’t shelve the idea of a by line too hastily, though I agree with all the inferences so far that it ideally should form a part of a wider publicity and marketing plan. At the moment, I don’t feel that Siempre has an identity that extends much beyond the tango community, so I applaud the committee’s attempt here to address that and really encourage them to keep going. It would be great to be at a point where the words ‘siempre tango’ speak for themselves, but I don’t believe that point has arrived yet.
