This Friday’s final Electric Light Hotel Milonga will focus on new tangos, valses and milongas. DJ Mark will be picking the best dance-able nuevo, electronico and modern tunes to match the mod-bohemian atmosphere of the venue.

Hi
Why have an evening with all modern/nuevo?
I for one can cope with maybe one or two tandas in an evening but couldn’t stand more than that.
When I see an evening is going to be all modern then I am definitely put off attending.
Maybe I’m just old fashioned (before anyone says it)

Hi Brian,
It was just an experiment really, and it was very successful in terms of dancer turn out. I thought Mark did a really good job of choosing the most inspiring and danceable modern music, both tango and non-tango.
Like you, I prefer the traditional stuff, but also enjoy dancing to one or two tandas of modern music in a night.
I rarely play more than 2 tandas of modern tango when DJing, but still get the odd request for more. It’s a bit of a balancing act to satisfy the various tastes and preferences.
But as you say – if it’s advertised as a “nuevo/modern” or “traditional” night then the dancers have a choice to attend or not, rather than being disappointed on the night. These days there are enough events on each week that, hopefully, everyone gets their weekly fix (or more) with their own preferred music.
Anyway, we’ll still be playing lots of traditional stuff at milongas to come; that a one-off event is not a change in focus. If there’s enough interest, Mark might repeat it… but traditional is definitely here to stay.
